Instructional Program Courses

SE Work Experience 1,2,3,4 (2 semesters each)

Prerequisites: STEP certified

Credits: 2 (per course)

This course provides an opportunity for students to develop marketable skills and knowledge in an occupation while working on the job. The student is supervised by the teacher (STEP)-coordinator and by the employer. The supervised work activities assist the student in gradually acquiring the appropriate attitudes and skills necessary to be successfully employed. The job training site provides opportunities to practice and improve appropriate job skills and attitudes. Student placement is sometimes a continuum, beginning with in-school placement and followed by placement at sites within the community. For a student to qualify for Work Experience credit, he/she must be gainfully employed, receive a payroll check, and work a minimum of ten hours a week for each semester they are employed. A student who quits the job or is fired from the job will receive a grade of “F” for the semester grade.
 

SE Learning Strategies (2 semesters)

This course is designed to help students with special needs transition successfully into high school. Topics covered include organization, using an assignment notebook, time management, note-taking, and other effective study techniques.
 

SE English 1,2,3,4 (2 semesters)

Open to: 9, 10, 11, 12

Credits: 2 (per course)

The SE English sequence of courses is designed to provide strategic and intensive instruction to students who have difficulty achieving at grade level in written expression. Individualized instruction is given to each student based on an assessment of current skills and each course continues the instruction at the student’s level from the previous course. 

SE Reading 1,2,3,4 (2 semesters per course)

Prerequisites: Placement by IEP team
Open to: 9, 10, 11, 12
Necessary materials: None
Credits: 2 (per course)

The purpose of these courses is to improve the students’ reading ability by developing background knowledge, vocabulary, comprehension, critical-thinking, test-taking skills and reading rate. The classes combine small group and individualized instruction. The curriculum is based on the research-based SRA Corrective Reading Program and each course continues the instruction at the student’s level from the previous course. Students in these courses are also in an English course.
 

SE Physical Science (2 semesters)

Prerequisites: Placement by IEP team
Open to: 9,10, 11, 12
Graduation requirement: Fulfills the physical science graduation requirement.
Fees: None
Necessary materials: A calculator would be helpful.
Credits: 2

This is an introductory course to acquaint the student with physical science. Relationships between matter and energy are studied and tested through various activities and experiments. Extra support is provided for students with deficits in reading, writing, or math that prevent placement in the general education physical science course.
 

SE Basic Skills Math (2 semesters)

Necessary materials: None
Credits: 2

This course is designed to provide strategic and intensive instruction to students who have difficulty achieving at grade level. The course will utilize a research-based direct instruction approach that focuses on core concepts, rules, and mathematical reasoning needed to allow the student to be successful in the pre-algebra curriculum. Individualized instruction will be given to each student based on an assessment of current skills.
 

SE Pre-Algebra (2 semesters)

Credits: 2

This course teaches essential pre-algebra content and provides students with an introduction to traditional algebra 1 content using a direct instruction approach. Individualized instruction will be given to each student based on an assessment of current skills.
Topics include basic operations with integers, decimals and fractions, problem solving, basic algebra skills, the coordinate system, straight line equations, exponents, and basic geometry skills. This course satisfies the geometry-content graduation requirement.
 

SE Geometry (2 semesters)

Prerequisites: Placement by IEP team
Fees: None
Necessary materials: Scientific calculator
Credits: 2

The student will study points, lines, planes, and space and their interrelationships. These will be applied to various polygons and their polygonal regions. A system of logic is studied and used in attaining an orderly reasoning process. Basic skills deficits will also be addressed. This course satisfies the geometry-content graduation requirement.
 

SE Math Essentials (2 semesters)

Credits: 2

SE Math Essentials is a course designed to provide strategic and intensive instruction to students who have difficulty achieving at grade level. The course will utilize a research-based direct instruction approach that focuses on core concepts, rules, and mathematical reasoning needed to allow the student to be successful in the algebra 1 curriculum. Individualized instruction will be given to each student based on an assessment of current skills.
The class will count as a math elective, but not towards the math graduation requirement.
 

SE Transitional Math (2 semesters)

This course is designed to provide students the opportunity to improve their computational skills by applying them to “real-life” experiences. The course will include key math concepts essential for successful adult living. Basic skill deficits will also be addressed.
