The Special Education Division offers a continuum of educational and related services for students with identified disabilities. These services are noted in each child’s Individual Education Plan (IEP) and are reviewed with parents regularly. Educational supports fall on a continuum and can range from low intensity, such as accommodations and modifications within the general education setting, to more intensive which may include direct services within a special education classroom. Special education services are always provided within the least restrictive environment that is appropriate to meet the individual needs of the student. All placement decisions are made by the IEP team which consisting of: the student, a parent or guardian, regular education teacher, special education teacher, and district designee. In addition, related service personnel, such as a social worker, counselor, speech pathologist, hearing or vision itinerant, etc. may be included based on individual student needs. Each special education student is assigned a special education teacher who serves as case-manager to coordinate the services outlined in the IEP. Related services are coordinated by the Director of Special Education and may include the following:
- Social work
- Occupational Therapy
- Physical therapy
- Vocational counseling / job coaching
- Paraprofessional support
- Teachers & consultants working with the deaf or hard-of-hearing
- Speech/language services
Students who have been evaluated for special education services but do not qualify as a child with a disability under the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) may qualify for services under Section 504 of the federal Rehabilitation Act of 1973. A child may qualify if they have a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities, have a record of a physical or mental impairment, or is regarded as having a physical or mental impairment.
